The definition of palliative sedation includes
a declarative sentence on ethical
implications. Of the many ethical issues in
the context of palliative sedation, this
chapter briefly discusses intention,
applicability of the doctrine of the double
effect, and suffering. These issues also refer
to patient autonomy, problems of indication
and decision-making process, and a broader
concept of family. The use of terms in the
updated framework carefully reflects their
ethical implications and represents a careful
consideration of the literature and
comments of the Delphi panel.
